Music House: A Symphony of Architecture and Melody

Residential Design Inspired by the Harmony and Continuity of Musical Tones

A unique residential design by Tonny Wirawan Suriadjaja, the Music House, is a harmonious blend of architecture and melody. Designed for a musician family, the house is a physical embodiment of musical strains, offering a space for playing instruments, recitals, and rehearsals. The design was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019.

The Music House stands out for its unique design concept. The building's shape is a seamless transformation of a basic form, promoting continuity and connectivity from the first floor to the second. The building mass at the back is higher than the front, echoing the flow of music tones. This design was inspired by the architect's experience at a music rehearsal hosted by the client's friend, where the client expressed a desire for a house that could accommodate music rehearsal activities.

The façade of the Music House is a blend of solid and semi-transparent elements, mirroring the vocal weight in music. The solid façade represents heavy tones such as tenor, baritone, or bass, while the semi-transparent façade represents high singing tones like soprano. The solid elements are represented with materials like concrete, while the semi-transparent elements are represented with glass and a concrete grill to create a not-so-transparent effect.

The use of concrete as the main building material supports the design's fluidity. The trapezoid roof, gradually inclined from the first floor to the second, is a simple detail made possible by the use of concrete. The stairway in the house not only facilitates the flow of space but also serves as a display area for artwork, adding another layer of creativity to the house.

The Music House is not just a living space but also a hub for musical activities and socializing. The stair becomes an active space where users can sit, interact, and display their artwork collection. The house also offers greenery views, adding a touch of nature to the musical haven. Built over an area of 420sqm, the house is located in Alam Sutera, South Tangerang, Indonesia.

The Music House is a testament to the architect's innovative approach to design, where the concept of continuity and harmony of musical tones is translated into a physical structure. The house's design, which goes from low tone to high tone, similar to how music flows, is a perfect example of how architecture can reflect and enhance lifestyle. The Music House, with its unique design and functionality, truly deserves the Silver A' Design Award it was awarded in 2019.
